Effective January 1, 2009 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a new HCPCS code for the WalkAide. The New Code for the WalkAide is E0770. Functional Electrical Stimulator, any type, complete system, NOS.
Reimbursement for a medical device includes three component parts; a unique code (HCPC code), coverage, and a reimbursement amount for the device.
Code: The WalkAide System now has a unique HCPC code. The unique code assigned by CMS to the WalkAide is E0770. The code should be used when submitting claims for Medicare and non-Medicare payers. The xx99 miscellaneous code can no longer be used when submitting claims for the WalkAide unless stipulated by the Third Party Payer. When submitting claims for replacement electrodes the existing HCPC code A4595 should be used.
Coverage: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services have issued a national coverage policy for the WalkAide. CMS will cover patients who have a diagnosis of Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury. Non-Medicare payers may cover the WalkAide for other patient populations such as multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury and other conditions due to an upper motor neuron lesion.
Payment: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have allowed $5500 when all conditions are met for coverage. Please see Medicare coverage for details.
